About Kyle Glasgow
Emerging young artist Kyle Glasgow is a clarinetist, teacher, producer, and instrument repair technician based in New York City and the DMV area. His performances have captivated audiences throughout the United States, Belgium, France, Spain, and Austria. A people person among people people, Kyle seeks to combat loneliness, and to live an exciting life filled with new and unique performance opportunities in order to connect with individuals from any background. Kyle believes that the intimacy and flexibility provided by chamber music provides greater power for communication, and he takes a particular interest in the merging of styles between modern music production and traditional performance practice. He seeks to break down classical music’s “high-brow” nature and make it more accessible. Kyle aims to pioneer the creation of cutting-edge extended techniques, and to push the boundaries of what is possible on the clarinet and for a wind quintet.
Kyle is an avid commissioner and advocate of contemporary music. Perpetually commissioning new works for the clarinet, Kyle most recently premiered a clarinet-cello duet titled “CopyCopyCatCat”, written by all-star cellist and composer Clancy Newman. Kyle specializes in chamber music and is a founding member and the manager of the IGNIS wind quintet, a nationally award-winning ensemble primarily focused on 21st-century and new music. First formed as the sixth resident Fellowship wind quintet at the University of Maryland, IGNIS has won awards at the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition, the New Orleans Chamberfest, and the Manhattan International Chamber Competition. IGNIS has commissioned many notable composers such as Aidan Gold, Andrew Faulkenberry, Katharine Petkovski, Ethan Resnik, and Chris Williams. They most recently premiered Shivering, a piece featuring live electroacoustic effects written by Ancel Neely.
Kyle has a multifaceted skillset with expertise in instrument repair, reed-making, conducting, and audio production. He most recently produced Robert DiLutis’s latest album, Vignettes, featuring underplayed works by black composers. He is an experienced auxiliary clarinetist and can be heard on several reference recordings in the Naxos musical database. Kyle has performed in clinics and masterclasses worldwide, including for the Queen of Spain through the Princess of Asturias Foundation and as the soloist/conductor of the UMD clarinet choir at ClarinetFest in Belgium and Austria. He teaches a private studio of clarinet students of all ages across the East Coast. A flexible musician with skill in multiple styles, Kyle enjoys playing in the Polka Terps polka band and the Machaya klezmer band. He holds a B.M. and M.M. in clarinet performance from the University of Maryland School of Music, where his primary teacher was Professor Robert DiLutis. He is now pursuing a Professional Studies Diploma from the Mannes Conservatory and studying with David Krakauer. His other notable teachers include David Drosinos, Sara Reese, Dr. D Ray McClellan, and Jo-Ann Sternberg.

IGNIS Quintet
Kyle is a founding member of IGNIS
IGNIS is an award-winning ensemble committed to unlocking the expressive potential of the wind quintet medium by “taking what is an inherently unmatched ensemble and not trying to compensate for it.” Whether through the music of Mozart or the music of the 21st century, IGNIS creates memorable, impactful performances by highlighting the “multi-layered, complex musical personalities” of its five members and celebrating the ways these distinct voices combine and interact. The ensemble was founded in 2021 as the University of Maryland’s sixth graduate fellowship woodwind quintet and served as the ensemble in residence at the 2022 Maine Chamber Music Seminar. During their fellowship at the University of Maryland, IGNIS was awarded first prize in the 2023 NOLA Chamberfest Emerging Artists competition and was a top prize winner at the 2023 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.
As devotees to the music of today, IGNIS focuses on presenting works by a diverse array of living composers and seeking expressive opportunities beyond the canonic wind quintet repertoire. In 2022, the ensemble was awarded an M-Cubator grant that financed the commissioning of Shivering by Ancel Neely, an innovative work for wind quintet with live electronic manipulation. IGNIS has also premiered the chamber symphony Desire Paths by William Kenlon.
As educators, IGNIS has taught at elementary, middle, high school, and collegiate levels. For the 2021-2022 season, IGNIS partnered with the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra, leading sectionals and teaching student masterclasses. IGNIS has worked with schools in the Prince George’s County public school system, leading assemblies and classes in addition to leading small-scale chamber music coachings for advanced students. At the collegiate level, members of IGNIS coached undergraduate music major chamber ensembles at the University of Maryland.
IGNIS currently consists of members Lisa Choi (flute), Nathaniel Wolff (oboe), Kyle Glasgow (clarinet), Molly Flanagan (horn) and Christian Whitacre (bassoon).
