What exactly are you researching?

I am researching how people connect together online. I want to study the experience of connecting with people online through the use of multiuser games.

What are you going to do?

I am going to be joining with people who are playing a multiuser game and participating in their activities as much as possible. I will be observing online behavior and asking questions about various events and activities. I will also be conducting informal and formal interviews with people in order to further learn about how people connect online and what that experience is like for the individual.

What do you want me to do?

You don't have to do anything but what you would normally do. I would like to study the experience in as natural a way as possible. I will occassionally ask questions that I would like you to answer and sometimes I may ask certain people to partake in an interview process.

Are you recording me?

I keep handwritten notes by my computer and I turn on the chat log in game and during online interviews.

What if I decide I don't want to do this?

You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time for any reason. If you have some concerns about any part of the study I will be happy to answer them at any time.

Are you going to collect any personal information?

I may collect basic demographic information such as age, sex, job, etc. All information given to me is voluntary and is kept strictly confidential.

Is this confidential?

Completely. Both your real name and your online alias will not be revealed to anyone. All information collected in personal interviews is also confidential.

Are there any risks?

None that I know of.

Will it hurt?

Everyone I have interviewed has found the process painless. Repetitive stress injury may result due to typing. Consult your doctor ;)

What if I have more questions?

Just ask me! I like to answer questions about my research and I hope to involve as many people as possible. You can find my contact information here.
